St. Patrick’s Day DIYs
When I think of St. Patrick’s Day, I think of shamrocks, gold, and rainbows and I had those themes in mind when I created this latest round of DIY craft projects.
These quick DIYs are perfect for beginning crafters or seasoned crafters who are short on time.
Green Rainbow
For the first project, I started with an unfinished wood rainbow from Target.
I applied a coat of Antique wax to the entire rainbow and when that dried, I quickly painted the front of the rainbow with Plaster chalk paint.
Next, I gave the top raised stripe of the rainbow a coat of Fern chalk paint.
To create a lighter shade of green for the second stripe, I poured some Fern chalk paint into a cup and mixed in a small amount of Plaster paint. Once it was mixed, I carefully painted the second stripe.
Then I added even more Plaster paint to the mixture and painted the final stripe of the rainbow.
For a sparkly touch, I purchased a package of green glass beads from Dollar Tree, mixed them all together, and used tacky glue to adhere them to the middle stripe.
Lucky Charms Crate Stand
I love decorating this interchangeable stand for every holiday and enjoy the challenge of coming up with new ways to embellish the piece. Check out this video if you’d like to learn how to create your own interchangeable crate stand.
To make the sign for the top, I added a wooden shamrock cutout to a jumbo craft stick and used my Cricut to cut the text out of gold shimmer vinyl.
For the sign on the front of the stand, I removed the clothespin from the back of a Dollar Tree chalkboard tag and attached a wooden horseshoe cutout to the front of the tag.
I wrapped a shamrock necklace around the crate for a banner and finished the piece by adding three mini jars full of glass beads to the top of the crate.
Shamrock Topiary
This DIY was inspired by a heart topiary that I saw while browsing Anthropologie’s website.
I found a large shamrock from Dollar Tree and knew it would be perfect for this Anthropologie-inspired project.
To start, I removed the tinsel from the shamrock.
I separated a long strand of Dollar Tree nautical rope into thinner strands and wrapped the rope around the shamrock.
For the new greenery on the shamrock, I purchased two Mini Leaf Wired Ribbon Garlands from Hobby Lobby. They were two different shades of green so I twisted them together and wrapped the garlands around the shamrock.
To make a pot for the topiary, I picked up an Easter bucket from Dollar Tree.
I removed the handle and used a wire cutter to clip off the parts that were sticking out.
To embellish the top of the pot, I purchased a pack of pop-up stickers from Dollar Tree and used them to line the top of the bucket.
Once the stickers were in place, I gave the pot a coat of gold spray paint.
To help the shamrock stand up in the pot, I stuck it down into some Dollar Tree styrofoam and hot glued the styrofoam to the bottom of the pot.
I placed several packs of Dollar Tree stones around the styrofoam to add weight and help keep the shamrock steady.
I finished the project by covering the rocks and remaining styrofoam with a thick layer of Dollar Tree floral moss.
Green Mushrooms
My friend Chris recently sent me a box of craft goodies and as soon as I saw these mushrooms in the box, I knew I wanted to add them to my St. Patrick’s Day tiered tray.
I started by giving the tops of the mushrooms two coats of green paint using the same shades that I used on the wooden rainbow above.
Once the green paint was dry, I painted over the circles on the mushrooms with a white paint marker.
To give the mushrooms a slight sheen, I gave them each a coat of matte Mod Podge and that was it for this super simple makeover.
Shamrock Window
For this simple St. Patrick’s Day craft, I started by adding floral moss to the front of a wood shamrock cutout.
To create the rainbow banner, I used a banner flag paper punch to cut flags out of colorful foam sheets.
I used hot glue to attach the flags to a piece of jute in rainbow order.
I removed the sign from a small Dollar Tree window and used hot glue to attach the shamrock to the center of the window.
To finish the project, I draped the rainbow banner across the front of the window and used hot glue to secure it in place.
Gold Pot Greenery
This project came together very quickly.
I found a small glass pot in my craft stash and gave it a coat of gold spray paint.
I used hot glue to attach a small piece of styrofoam to the inside of the pot.
Then I filled the pot with floral moss to cover the styrofoam and keep it steady.
For the greenery in the pot, I used a wire cutter to cut a few sprigs off of a Dollar General clearance wreath and stuck them down into the styrofoam. I also added a few of the white berries from the wreath.
To add more visual interest to the pot, I wrapped a piece of ribbon around the top and secured it in place with hot glue. I create a simple bow with the ribbon and glued that to the pot as well.
This simple piece is perfect for adding a pop of greenery to a St. Patrick’s Day display.
Shamrock Envelope
To create this project, I started with a Dollar Tree envelope I purchased last fall.
After removing the twine and beads from the top, I peeled off as much of the paper background as I could.
I used a baby wipe to saturate the remaining paper and scraped off the residue with my paint scraper.
To keep the paint off of the particleboard, I used painter’s tape to cover the front and sides of the piece. Then I took the envelope outside and gave it a coat of gold spray paint.
Once the paint dried, I removed a piece of rainbow paper from a paper pack I purchased at pOpshelf. It is a relatively new store in my area and I have found so many wonderful craft items there.
After tracing around the envelope, I cut on the line and trimmed the paper to fit inside the envelope.
I used a glue stick to attach the scrapbook paper to the inside of the envelope.
To fill the envelope, I purchased a few shamrock picks from Dollar Tree in two different shades of green. I pulled some of the shamrocks from the stems, placed them in the envelope until I was happy with the arrangement, and that was it for this simple Dollar Tree DIY.
