Valentine Jar Fillers

DIY

With the availability of many beautiful vases and jars at Target, Hobby Lobby, and other retail stores, I thought it would be fun to create a blog post dedicated to providing ideas for seasonal fillers for these containers.

Wooden Mushrooms

Unfinished wooden mushrooms can be painted seasonal colors and added to a jar for a fun touch of whimsical Valentine decor.

Foam Marshmallows

You can purchase inexpensive foam cylinders or use white model magic to create large marshmallow shapes and add simple faces to them using brown fabric paint. To create rosy cheeks, you can use a single hole punch to cut circles out of a thin foam sheet and attach them to the marshmallows with hot glue.

Valentine Donuts

Another option to fill a seasonal jar is to give Dollar Tree play donuts a makeover by using fabric paint to create dimensional icing and adding plastic sprinkles to the paint to give the donuts a bit of seasonal flair.

Beaded Hearts

Seed beads in various colors can be added to small hearts for an elegant touch.

Love Letters

To create this popular Valentine vase filler, cut rectangle shapes out of foam board, paint stir sticks, craft sticks, or any other sturdy material and paint them white. Use a thin permanent marker or paint pen to draw lines around the envelope and add small hearts for a sweet touch.

Foam Candy

To create imitation Smarties candies, cut apart inexpensive foam rollers, paint the pieces your desired colors, and wrap them in cellophane, tying the ends with baker’s twine. Use a design tool, such as Canva, to create custom labels and print them on sticker paper. Finish the candies by cutting out the labels and sticking them in place.

Wooden Spools

Tiny wooden spools can be customized with ribbon of your choice and added to a small gumball machine or another vessel for a fun addition to a Valentine display.

Yarn-Wrapped Hearts

To create a simple addition to a bowl of greenery, cut heart shapes out of scrap cardboard and wrap them in yarn of your choice.

Additional Vase Fillers

In addition to making custom seasonal fillers for jars and vases, there are also many store-bought options that would work great as well, including:

  • Ornaments

  • Yarn pom poms

  • Beaded garlands

  • Plastic strawberries
